Starpath's version of The Official Frogger is one of the best ports of Frogger, if not THE best, to find its way into peoples' homes. It's a little disappointing, then, that the Official Frogger on Atari's 8-bit series of computers, isn't nearly as good. Some of that may be due to the fact that Starpath didn't develop this one, but Sierra On-Line stepped in and developed it instead. In fact, I think that the Parker Bros. version of Frogger on the Atari 8-bit is a better overall game. That isn't to say that the Official Frogger doesn't have any advantages over the Parker Bros. port - the music, for example, plays while you move the frogs through the screen here. The Parker Bros. version only plays music during the title screen and between levels. So, if you're an audio snob, then that alone may make you like this port more. I tend to focus on gameplay, and I feel like that's where the Official Frogger slips off of a wet log and into the river of disappointment. While I felt like the Parker Bros. version of the game was a bit on the easy side, this version seems even easier…to the point where it gets boring due to an insufficient amount of challenge to keep pushing you to get better. It's also noticeable that there's no real graphical difference. Thanks to the Starpath Supercharger, the Atari 2600 version of the Official Frogger saw a heavy increase in the visual quality of the game. With no Starpath Supercharger for the Atari 8-bit, Sierra On-Line pretty much just presented a game that looks nearly identical to what Parker Bros. had released…though, in fairness, they did so before Parker Bros. Still, despite its flaws, the Official Frogger is still a decent game…but unless background music is what you care about most in a game, I'd stick with the Parker Bros. version of Frogger over this one.
