Of all of the horror games that I played for this Halloween in 2024, Last Lesson is the one that gave me the best jump scare. Most jump scares give me a little tickle in the chest, but I don't really flinch otherwise. Last Lesson got me to hop a little bit in my seat…granted, they only got me once, but a nice combination of loud noise and the visual caught me off-guard that one time. Anyway, this is a decent little horror game otherwise - the premise is that it's a horror-themed escape room built inside of an abandoned school. You close up for the night…then you're not allowed to leave. You can die in this game, but the opportunities to do so are few and far between…it's mostly just walking around, solving puzzles, and taking in the atmosphere. The end made it sound like there may be a sequel coming down the road. While this game isn't great, it's passable, and I'd love to see if REVVALUTION STUDIO is able to improve on everything in this game to deliver an even better experience, If that sequel ever comes to be.

I'm a patient person. I don't mind sitting and waiting…but Laundry Night doesn't make sitting and waiting very fun. In this game, you've got three loads of laundry to wash. Then three loads of laundry to dry. Then three loads of laundry to take out to your car. Along the way, you'll find yourself locked in the tiny laundromat…where you can buy chips from the vending machine, look at a bulletin board and…well, DIE!!....Just kidding. You do have a mildly creepy lady appear a few times, though. And eventually, you'll find your way into the back room of the laundromat, and eventually ending up at the dumpster on the side of the laundromat…saving the best for last, I guess….to DIE!!....Sorry, I just wanted to throw that in here again. Anyway, Laundry Night isn't bad enough for me to consider it amongst the worst games that I've ever played, but it's also not really good enough for me to feel the need to recommend it. I like the concept here (see Bloodwash for a good laundromat horror game) but Laundry Night just doesn't pull it off very well. If you'd like to try it anyway, you can find it over at itch.io for free.

Hooo boy, what have we got here? Lawnmower Game 3: Horror (the 3rd of 4 in the series) is a game where you’re apparently a veterinarian version of Dr. Kevorkian as you attempt to mow the poorly-growing grass in three different levels. The catch? Well, every nearby animal has no desire to live and will hurl themselves into your lawnmower to end their own lives, which obviously is going to destroy your lawnmower and prevent you from cutting more grass. The premise makes me think that this would have been a fun Atari 2600 game as it’s a simple concept that does not need great graphics for it to be executed well. Unfortunately, with delayed controls and apparently the need for high-end processing power (not sure if it’s my computer or the game just naturally lags that badly) this game is not executed well and is pretty much terrible. Still a step up from their Horror Fish Simulator game, though…in comparison to that minnow, this one is a whopper.

Layers of Fear is basically a haunted house simulator. There are some puzzles to be solved, sure, but most of the game just involves the player following a path while the game attempts to scare you during your travel. I guess you could classify it as a haunted house walking simulator. This game is more about the story told and the atmosphere created than any real sort of action that you'd traditionally see in a horror game. While I find it fun to take my time in most games and search through every nook and cranny, I can easily see why some people may not enjoy their time in Layers of Fear if they were expecting something a little more action-packed. While I like Layers of Fear, it definitely isn't perfect. My biggest complaint is that the size of an area to trigger the icon to pick up or interact with items is sometimes ridiculously small...Aside from that annoyance, though, Layers of Fear was enjoyable enough where did return and walk through the house a few times since, and on multiple platforms. Layers of Fear isn't for everyone, but I think that most folks that play it will find something to like here.

I liked the original Layers of Fear…it wasn't perfect, but I enjoyed it for what it was. I was thinking I'd feel the same way about the sequel…but I don't think I like this one as much. Some of the same flaws from the original are still here…using a mouse to swing open doors, slide open drawers, and move levels is nice in theory, but a few times it caused my mouse to minimize the screen while I was trying to play. It also feels really awkward at times. The big thing I dislike about this game is the length…I kinda felt like the original Layers of Fear was pushing it a tad with its length. Layers of Fear 2 is even longer. It tries to make up for that by making the environments more varied, but to me, it felt like much of the same, just with different-looking environments along the way. I will say that I did enjoy the story of the game, though, and I liked how they tied it into the original game…but the story wasn't enough to prevent me from wondering when it's be over by the end. That's not to say that Layers of Fear 2 is a bad game. It's not. But, I do feel like due to the increased length, Layers of Fear 2 overstays its welcome a bit by the time the credits roll. If you liked the original Layers of Fear, and want a little more length to the game, then you may like it more than I did. As far as I'm concerned, though, this is a decent game that I wouldn't necessarily pick over indie horror games of a similar style, and a much cheaper price point.

ASK_GAMES tends to put of horror games that I like in theory, but don't care for nearly as much in execution. They've even made a game where the execution was so poor that I decided to move on to another game and never return…even though I actually really liked the concept of it (see Paranormal Place). Some of my issues with this game were in translation, I believe, as the game would tell you to do something and what you actually needed to do didn't match the description. The game was developed in Eastern Europe (I believe) and the language options are English and Russian - my guess is that English is the second language. That isn't to say that the game is unplayable - the English is fine, but there are spots where things could definitely be worded better. This game also doesn't do a great job of pointing out obvious things…like a clock will chime when you solve a puzzle at one point, which kinda hides the fact that a book fell from a shelf, revealing a key that allows you to escape. Unless you happen to turn around and see the book fall (which I did on my second try, after restarting after I thought I may have gotten a bug to prevent me from advancing) you may not have any clue what to do after solving the puzzle. Another thing I hated was going into the basement…or leaving the basement for that matter. If you walk into a certain area on the stairs, your flashlight goes out…I'm guessing it's there for atmosphere. If it happens once, I agree, it creates a good atmosphere. When you know it's coming every time, it becomes very annoying. Once you're annoyed, the atmosphere is gone…which, unfortunately, seems to be an issue with most ASK_GAMES that I play. They do a great job of setting up a creepy atmosphere, then ruin it by annoying you to the point where you're no longer absorbed in the game. Anyway, despite my complaints, this was still passable. I don't understand some of it (undead granny is never explained - she seemingly has little to do with the plot other than the developers thought she'd be cool) and some of it can be frustrating, but overall it's a decent experience worth checking out if you want a cheap horror game.

I was really looking forward to playing Lifeless Planet...and while I still think that it's a passable game, I did also walk away from playing it disappointed. The concept is neat and all, but there was far too little exploration for my tastes...especially considering that the game takes place on a mysterious planet. I was hoping to explore and discover some of those mysteries. It's also a tad too long - for the last hour or so I was thinking that I just wanted to finish this and be done. Lastly, the controls can be frustrating when platforming - and the animations get a little jerky at times, which doesn't help much, either. That said, this is still an interesting game and while I got bored with the gameplay after a while, there are plenty of different areas to traverse, so I never got bored with the scenery. It's not a masterpiece by any means, but it's still passable and might be worth looking into if the idea of an adventure game with some platforming elements interests you.

I didn't quite know what to expect when I played LISA for the first time...And shortly after starting to play it, I wondered why I hadn't played it sooner. While it's not without its flaws, I absolutely adore this game. It's an RPG with very good humor, plenty of the bizarre, and quite a bit of references to professional wrestling - all things that I love. If you're not a wrestling fan and worried about the wrestling references, don’t worry. Most of them are cleverly inserted that they seem natural to the setting, but if you’re a fan, you’ll get it...stuff like the main character being named Brad Armstrong, Hawaiian shirts "make you feel like you have the whole world in your hands," voices in someone’s head talk to them and they understand, Shocklord and his clumsy nature, etc. But anyway, it's an RPG that takes about 10 hours to beat, with plenty of hidden characters and locations to discover, adding quite a bit of replay value to go back to try to find them all. I highly recommend this...especially if you've got a bit of a warped sense of humor like I do, and would like that humor mixed in with a pretty unique and solid story. LISA easily found its way into being one of my favorite games that I've ever played.

When I first started creating this website, one of the first games that I was experimenting with the layouts with was an awful game called Horror Fish Simulator. It poorly mixed horror with fishing in one of the most broken games that I've ever played. Loan Shark, while not a game that'll set the world on fire, manages to mix horror and fishing to deliver a passable game with a decent, short story. The concept of Loan Shark is that you're a fisherman in heavy, heavy debt. Your goal is to fish repeatedly so that you can pay off your debts…the problem is that you owe 999999 euros…and each fish that you catch maybe knocks 50 euros off of your debt….and that debt is due tonight. Luckily for you, after a few catches, you'll reel in a magical fish who lets you use his eye as bait…which results in you catching a golden fish that is worth a significant amount of cash….and from there, you'll find yourself more and more in debt to this magical, one-eyed fish as you struggle to pay off that crushing debt that you've obtained. The fishing isn't anything special….reel the fish in when they aren't moving, stop reeling when they are. If this was a long game, the fishing would be repetitive and boring by the end, but Loan Shark lasts about 30 minutes in length, so it ends before anything can really start to get too old. The story is also done well enough, where I found myself curious as to what other forks in the story I could discover to get a different end result…and with the short length of the game, I was happy to experiment and play through a few times to figure that out. Overall, Loan Shark is a decent, unique game that I liked. It's not something I'd say, "You must play this game!!," about, but if you happen to find it on sale, or at a price that you think is fair for a 30 minute indie game, then it's definitely worth giving a try.

If Locked Up was a little shorter, I think it would have been pretty enjoyable…instead, it overstays its welcome a bit. The premise of Locked Up is that you're locked in an area - sometimes a small room, sometimes within a home, and your goal is to figure out how to keep the game moving. Essentially, this is a video game version of putting two near-identical pictures side-by-side and asking someone to find the differences. As you pace back and forth trying to find a way out, you need to pay attention to your surroundings for things that have changed. This is what the kids call a "walking simulator," by the way. There's no action here - it's simply a game where you walk around, figure stuff out, and yawn when the game attempts to scare you and fails miserably. I never felt any feeling of unease of discomfort when walking around…even the jump scares failed to make me flinch. By the end, I was mocking everything around me…telling some of the evil spirits around me how rude it was to breathe through their mouths. Anyway, like I mentioned at the beginning, this game isn't awful…it's just too long for how dull it is. If it was about half of the length that it is (I beat it in just under two hours) then it probably would have been fine. But with no real scares and not a whole lot of interesting things to do or look at, you mind find yourself wishing that you were "locked up" rather than playing this game before you see the credits roll.

I think I've gotten to the point where I can say that while I WANT to like games that are developed by ASK_GAMES, I just don't. I have a soft spot for Christmas-themed horror games, and Lonely Christmas looks like it should be a game, if there was going to be one, that I liked from ASK_GAMES…and I really can't say anything good about it. The game starts out with you having to do tasks…without a whole lot of direction on how to complete them in terms of where things would be stored that you need. When you get past that, you "play a computer game" which is basically just watching footage of another ASK_GAMES game, Paranormal Activity…a game that I got so frustrated with last year, that I gave up on it. The footage goes on for WAY too long…and then it switches from normal perspective to seeing the footage fully on your screen. Bleh. After that, you're supposed to set off fireworks "by the slide." If you go out the front door, when you're told to go by the slide, the camera turns right. I spent a good 5 minutes just wandering around on that side of the house trying to find anything that would be considered a slide…then, having found nothing where the camera pointed to, I wandered around the whole yard…and eventually found it in the backyard, to the LEFT of where I came out in front. After putting the fireworks in position, then I had fun trying to find the awful, small trigger areas so that I could set them all off and advance on in the game. The word "fun" in the previous sentence was dripping in sarcasm, by the way. From there, it goes into the "horror" aspects of the game…which isn't very scary when the thing that you're supposed to be afraid of is constantly running away from you when you approach it. You play as an 8-year-old child, by the way. The evil force that's supposed to frighten you is running away from a child. Unfortunately, Lonely Christmas isn't very lonely at all…it joins many of ASK_GAMES other titles in the "do not recommend" category. Now that I think of it, because of that, they probably should have named this Crowded Christmas instead. I will continue to play ASK_GAMES titles in hopes that they win me over eventually...but I'm starting to wonder if that will ever happen.

I'm a pretty big fan of the "Devil Came Through Here" franchise, which includes Downfall and the Cat Lady, so I've been wanting to play Lorelai for a while to see where the next game's story leads. Despite buying it back when it first came out, I've only just now finally gotten around to playing it…and after playing it, I'm annoyed that I waited so long. Lorelai is the same basic gameplay of the other games in the franchise, but with an updated graphical approach that looks both familiar to other games in the series but also completely new. John, the Stepfather in this game, is a fantastic villain - there is absolutely nothing redeemable about him. He is a horrendous monster and you'll spend most of the game just wanting to see him get what's coming to him….unfortunately, when you reach that point, it feels like a bit of a let-down. Still, despite that, I really liked Lorelai. It still isn't on the same level as the Cat Lady, in my opinion, but it's still a very solid adventure game….as long as you have patience, because some parts of the game are a little slow. If you like the other games in the Devil Came Through Here series, though, then you'll probably like Lorelai. If you just want to play a slow-paced, stylistic adventure game, though, you'll probably like Lorelai, too.

After being annoyed by Lonely Christmas, I saw that ASK_GAMES had a newer game that came out in 2025, and unlike Lonely Christmas, this one was getting positive reviews on Steam. So, against my better judgment, I decided to give that game a shot. That game is Lost Child…and it hasn't changed my stance on ASK_GAMES. They're usually nice-looking games with an okay atmosphere created….but they simply aren't my cup of tea. Lost Child took me a little over an hour to complete…and it felt like it took way longer than that. Near the end of the game, I was so bored that I came very close to just turning this game off…I genuinely did not care if I finished it, nor did I care what the ending of the story was. It was a predictable end, so by sticking with it, I didn't really gain much. My usual complaint about small trigger areas in ASK_GAMES titles is here…though it's not as frequent or as awful as in other titles. If I needed to activate something, like a phone, I could zoom in and move by mouse around while repeatedly clicking and I was usually able to get it to trigger. In fairness, this may be one of the better ASK_GAMES games that I've played…I'm still not really a fan, but some complaints I've had of their games in the past seem to at least be improved here. The Lost Child hasn't converted my opinion of ASK_GAMES, but it has shown me that they are improving. If I keep giving them a chance, they may win me over eventually…unfortunately, this game wasn't the one to do it.

Love is another one of those tough-as-nails platformers where you'll probably die repeatedly as you play, but for some reason you continue to play anyway because it's still fun. It's like a person with a severe stutter that loves to chit-chat...it may take them a few attempts to get specific words out, but you know they'll eventually get there since they want to say some more stuff. It has retro graphics 'cause that seems to be the "in" thing right now...and that's really all I have to say about Love as a whole. I guess I can add that it took me about 18 minutes to beat (according to Steam's play time counter, anyway), so it's an okay game to just pop in when you've got a few minutes to kill. It's not great, but it's still decent and usually has a low price tag making it a very worthwhile purchase. For what it's worth, I enjoyed those 18 minutes. If you like tough platformers, Love may be worth checking out…if you don’t, then I doubt that you’ll love Love.
