I've always liked Q*Bert. My first exposure to the orange turkey baster with legs was a cardboard stand at the local Wal-Mart when I was a kid - it was there to advertise the NES port of the game. Several years before the NES port, however, Parker Bros. had released several other ports of the game. This port on the Intellivision was a solid one. While it sported six layers instead of seven, like on the Atari 2600 port, it looks much nicer than the port on Atari's popular console. The enemies look good for the hardware and the isometric cubes that you hop on look nice, too. The only thing really holding this port back from me giving it a slightly higher score is that it takes a while to get used to the disk on the Intellivision controller in order to properly make jumps. You will eventually get used to it if you play long enough, but since Q*Bert's isometric jumping can take a little time to get used to on its own, the Intellivision controls feel like another hurdle that the player has to jump over in order to enjoy this game. Another aspect that many complain about is that the enemies tend to jump down onto the platforms without warning, which can lead to some cheap deaths if you happen to be on one of those platforms with an enemy drops onto the screen. Overall, though, this port of Q*Bert is a decent one…but it does require a little more effort to get used to maneuvering the potty-mouthed orange creature around than it does in other variations of the game.
