I like the concept of Frog Bog, though once you begin to play, it's not quite as fun as it appears to be. Essentially, Frog Bog is a game where you take the role of a frog and you complete against another frog. The idea is to jump back and forth between the two lily pads while eating as many bugs as you can before the time limit runs out. Instead of a timer showing you how much time you have left, however, the environment around you changes to let you know. Your play time is one full day, so once it becomes night time, the frogs find themselves falling asleep to end the game. Unfortunately, despite some neat ideas, the gameplay of Frog Bog is boring enough where you may find yourself falling asleep before the frogs. Between the controls that don't work very well for this game (Mattel's port of this game over to the Atari 2600 fixed that via use of the joystick) and the insects that seem to be eaten more due to luck than any sort of skill, Frog Bog is a neat novelty of a game that I think most people would play once, then never feel motivated to return to again…but, I say that, and the average review score tells a different story, with a score quite a bit higher than mine. So, I suppose this is a game where you should try it for yourself and see what you think - is it a neat concept with poor execution, or a neat concept that was successfully pulled off? I, personally, feel like this frog is bogged down.

I believe that this port of Froger to the Intellivision was the first game that Parker Bros. published for the console…and while it was a solid effort on their part, it's also an odd instance where the more powerful Intellivision had a port that looked inferior to the port on the less powerful Atari VCS. Everything looks very simplistic and blocky…that said, however, I do believe that this is the only console port, up to its release, to also have those cuddly-but-deadly otters as obstacles to avoid…so, while you're giving up some of the cosmetic aspects of the game, you are gaining a mild improvement in enemy/obstacle variety here. Anyway, even with the head-scratching appearance of the game, this port of everyone's favorite pixelated frog is still a decent one. Aside from slowdown that happens from time to time, which feels odd since this isn't exactly pushing the limits of the console, the game plays pretty well. Still, though, if this was your only home console in the early 80s, and you were a fan of Frogger, Parker Bros. did a good enough of a job where I think you'd enjoy your time here. However, if you happened to own or play any other port of Frogger, you may be disappointed with what you get here…especially since just a few, short months later, both the Colecovision (from Parker Bros.) and the Atari 2600 (from Starpath) would get excellent home ports of this game.
