For a long time, when it came to kart racing games on the Dreamcast, I preferred Wacky Races to Space Race. I can’t really explain why, except that maybe Wacky Races was a cartoon about racing, so I felt it was a better fit, maybe. Anyway, as time has passed, I’ve grown to appreciate Space Race more and more for what it is – a very good kart racer with cel-shaded graphics that makes you feel like you’re watching a real cartoon. On top of that, Looney Tunes staples, like anvils dropping from the sky and bombs to toss at fellow racers are here to add to the authenticity. The only real flaw with Space Race is a flaw that many kart racers suffer from – how cheap the races can be. While it’s fun using all of the weapons at your disposal, it’s also very frustrating when you get hit with every one of those weapons, right after another, with the finish line in sight, and drop from first place to last place to end the race. But anyway, if you want a quality kart racer on the Dreamcast, and if you’re a fan of typical Looney Tunes mayhem, Space Race will satisfy you. It’s no Mario Kart, but it’s still very good.
