While I've never been a big fan of the Flight Simulator series that Microsoft put out, I can't deny that they're some pretty popular games. But some folks don't realize that the game didn't see a Microsoft release until 1982. The game's developers, Sublogic, released the original game on the Apple II and TRS-80 computers in 1980. In this game, the player is tasked with piloting a modernized Sopwith Camel…and you've gotta get over the "hump" of piloting an aircraft used in the first World War, over 60 years before this game was released. Get it? Because camels have humps…If a camel didn't have any humps, do you know what we'd have to call him? Humphrey. Sorry. Continuing on with the review, Sublogic advertised this game as a "visual flight simulator that gives you realistically stable aircraft control." It also boasted that the graphics engine was capable of drawing 150 lines per second…which probably seems laughable to any young'un reading this, but back in 1980, that was something worth crowing about. Speaking of graphics, they're primarily wire frame graphics done in black and white, and the scenery is pretty limited, but it gets the point across. All in all, this is a pretty basic simulation of flying an aircraft, but it manages to do what it sets out to do - provide the player sitting at their desk at home with a mild feeling that they're piloting a World War fighter plane. It's a passable game, but I don't know if the average player would find much fun in it. If you like the Flight Simulator series, though, then it may be worth checking this game out to see how the games got their start.
